The Job - part 1

I warn you: I am in a bad mood.

Still no own account for the computers. I am stuck here. I don't understand the data anymore. What's the hell I am doing here? One week for nothing! Therefore I cannot explain to you what I am suppose to do here. I am not sure anymore. I still think the whole project is interesting and doable, but just give me the right tools I need!

I think I will go for beer tonight!

The campus

Yes, since three days I am working on this beautiful campus. It is really nice and quite international. They even have a cricket field. (I still couldn't find one, who could explain me this game!) Yep, it is full of sport fields, e.g. basketball, net ball (what is it?), tennis and even a swimming pool. The following pics show you my daily walk to work:

Brisbane is actually quite hilly. It is even worse than you can see on the last pic. Now the entrance of my building. I like this palm trees!

On the way to deal with some administration stuff I took pics of some neighbour-institutes.

the first day in brisbane

After a long sleep, I tried to discover my room and Brisbane. First the room: it is livable. Just a desk is missing. but I can do my stuff on the living-room table as well. the other girls are always in their rooms. what a waste! Here some pics from my room.
In the late afternoon I planned to walk around the huge campus of the University of Queensland. The first impression you can see on this pic. But then I decided to take the CityCat and to take a ride on the river. I spend some time on the Southern Bank. I would describe it as an artificial relaxing island surrounded by tower blocks. It is crowded with restaurants and cafes, gras to lie down etc. For a walk a nice region and to have a nice BBQ. I went on with the CityCat and took the pic from Brisbane by night. It is getting dark here quite early.

in four days around half the world - or - the journey to brisbane

05. Oktober 2005 7.40pm and still in Berlin And let's go I thought. The traveling to Berlin (Tegel) was just perfect, right on time. (left pic: My parents in disguise as Australien tourists!) But why travelling on an easy way? That would be too simple. Let's have this flight to London-Heathrow a delay of 150 minutes. So I will definitely miss the flight to Hongkong, because I would have had only 2 hours to change. There we go. The ladies from the check-in told me that I will get an hotel and that they will book me new flight in London. Great! Good start! I am surprisingly still in a good mood. I am absolutely relaxed. Yeah, that's travelling.

9pm still Berlin Yeah, we got our first voucher for food. I love British Airways! Food for 15€. I found one salad, one sandwich, one espresso, two chocolate bars and one beer. Now I feel sick. But I don't mind, I have time. Everytime I try to use the internet terminal it crashes. Who wrote this bloody software? I will recommand them some bioinformaticians.
10.35pm still Berlin Yes, I am in the plane to London. And when I say plane, I mean a plane. As a frequently user of Ryanair and Easyjet you would love it. We got a food bag (no, not food again!). It contains an apple, orange juice, water, a achocolate bar and a brez'n. *sniff* I miss Bavaria! The plane is almost empty. Maybe one third of all seats are used. I almost feel alone.
11.15pm on the way to Heathrow Coffee for free, why not? Night or day, I don't care anymore. They are all sleeping, what's wrong with them? I enjoy the music coming out from my armrest. Ok, then I do partying by myself.
6. October 20051am english time London Heathrow Hotel Crowne Plaza Right, a delay of 150 minutes can happen. People from British Airways were waiting for me here. They organised this hotel and the flight to Hongkong. The bad thing is the flight will be at 6pm. They didn't know I had to go to Brisbane. Anyway, I will try to get another earlier connection. The good thing is the hotel. One night costs normally 169Pounds (ca. 240€). I got my own concierge, who brought my luggage upstairs. The air condition in my room was set to 18 degrees (crazy, or what?) Now there are 22degrees. You have to understand, I go to Australia. On the TV-screen appeared "Welcome, Mrs J Sprenger". Thanks, but with who will I share this room? Two large beds, madness!
I wish I had one of them in Freising. Now I have such a nice offer of beds and no man *scream*. Crazy situation, but I really enjoy it. It is still fun for me.
9.20am hotel English breakfast - puke! I could avoid the white beans and sausages in the morning. I try to contact BA now, but 2 out of three phone numbers don't work. But I am still optimistic.
11.25 airport Ok, no other way to Brisbane. 6.25pm to Hongkong then 10 hours in Hongkong. So I have at least time to visit the city. On the bus to the airport I met an american guy. He tried to convince me that Schroeder is doing what Chirac is saying. Like Bush is just following Blair. The wars in Kosovo and Iraq were done because Blair wanted so. RIGHT, I am not convinced.
1pm London airport I just finished a great conservation with an english guy. I don't know how, but he guessed I am german. Maybe I look so well organised. He loves Germany. He really is adoring it. He is the biggest fan from the german rock band "The . Scorpions" He is going to every concert. I didn't know they still exist. But he likes Queen too, his luck. We almost talked for one hour. That was really nice. And of course, he doesn't know "Dinner for one". So I will get it for him. I love airports!
7. October 200512.44am almost in Hongkong It is quite hard to sit for almost 12 hours. Radio and TV are hard to understand because of the background noise. I tried to sleep and I think I succeded. We got nice food. Shortly after taking off they served some chicken with pasta. And now I got a warmed-up sandwich. I am still tired. Hongkong I'm coming.
2.55 Hongkong on the way to the city center First impressions: huge living boxes, right side the sea and left the mountains. a huge port for goods in TsingYi, surrounded by palm trees and mixed forest. In Kowloon I saw only the huge station. there are tunnels between the Hongkong-islands. Next station is Hongkong-city.
4.35pm Hongkong Pacific Coffee Bar Nice bread after a while of walking. The city is definitely worth to visit. But I wouldn't like to live here. It is too narrow. Huge houses, 20-30 floors high.

8. October 2005 BRISBANE
My supervisor Rohan Teasdale picked me up from the airport. He gave me a nice overview of Brisbane and showed me the campus I will work on. The he brought me to my shared house. The address is:
Unit 3
77 Sir Fred Schonell Drive
St. Lucia
4067 Brisbane QLD
Australia

So, don't hesitate and send me postcards!!

Martina and me met already on Saturday. She didn't change at all! I took my first picture in Brisbane.

Cambridge

I am soooo tired. I spent some days in Cambride and met Bene, Michael and Markus over there. We had great fun. The usual places, Nero and Eagle. The usual drinks, hotchoc (tea for Markus ;) ) and Stella. Ups, ok two pint of beer, chatting with scandinavian people and so on.
i will update this later!

ok, i am back now. yep, the last four days were filled with meeting friends! In Berlin I had a nice cup of coffee with Katja. we haven't seen eachother for a little while, so we found of course a lots of topics to gossip about. :) Hey, i wish you good luck for the next job and enjoy Berlin. Thanks for the meeting, we have to do it again somewhere on this planet!

and then at last i met bene at nero in cambridge. it was nice to see him again, although he has such blond stuff in his hair :) . and finally did micha join us. we went to his house, which he is sharing with two girls (!). The house is just great, if you know the english conditions! ;) Micha gave me the opportunity to overnight there. this bed!!! almost 4m² just for me!! :)
and last but not least markus arrived in cambridge. and what did we do? we went for food, how typicall! but to celebrate my last evening in cambridge, only bene went with me to The Eagle, the famous pub for "scientists to be". After two pints we were quite pissed, and we were clarified about how to recognise a homosexual one if it is not obvious by a scandinavian couple. we still don't know if "it" is a he or a she but is was funny. i just hope we will get the picture she took from us. we will see.
we arrived quite late at micha's place, so we decided to have a black night. and what had I to discover after four years of studies together. micha is a real good chief, especially at 2am making delicious muffins. :)

the train to stansted was quite early at 4.39am. you know what it means. arrived in schönefeld i found my backpack back completely destroyed. i didn't lose some stuff, but I need this backpack for australia. sh..! then the german system to buy tickets for the train. AAARRRGG! one machine, a long queue of people in front of it, and just accepting cash, but no 50€ banknotes. and you know what? i got my ticket from the controlleur with my kreditcard. a great day!

anyway, just hope you have such friends and not such a day!

hear from you and take care!

book review - The Cider House Rules

I told you the I was busy reading two books at the same time. And this afternoon I could finish both of them. I am afraid that I cannot judge about the philosophical one. First I would like to read it again and second in my opinion the view about such a book changes everytime you read it anyway. What do you think?

About the book from John Irving now:
I expected an exciting, haunting story full of feelings and so on. But this wasn't unfortunately the case. It was for me hard to read, but it was getting better and better. The story on its own is actually not soo bad. Its about the topic abortion, orphans, love etc. in a time of war in America the early last century. I don't know why the years are always written like this: 193- or 194-. What's the point of doing this? I haven't seen the movie and I don't plan to do so.
Conclusion: Read it if you want to and if you have time for a book of more than 700 pages. I don't regret that I took the time, but I am not impressed or overzealous about it.

Briefly another thing :

I arrived save at my parents place. We had yesterday the birthday from my mum, so I could see all my relatives at once to say good bye again. I enjoy the weather here. It is currently quite sunny here. I clean all my stuff and try to prepare things for Australia. Besides this nothing happend.

Have a nice weekend!! Take care!

good bye

The last evening in Freising *snivel*. I packed more or less all my stuff and I am ready to go now. I went to Munich today to say good bye to my good friend Maja. We had a nice girlie-evening in Lotter-Leben next to the Viktualienmarkt. It is a really nice restaurant and I just can recommand it to you to go there for nice food and drinks. Afterwards I went back to Freising to say good bye to Bibi, my flat mate for almost two years. We haven't seen eachother very often, but if we met then in the bar of our student accomodation. We had a final beer together. Yep we had a great time here. Thanks, Bibi!!
Tomorrow I will be on road, at last. I missed a bit driving a car. I hope I will enjoy it tomorrow. Loud music, singing on my own! What a fun!
Australia is coming closer and closer. I was looking for some leisure things in Brisbane. I hope I can find something overthere, e.g. skates to be a bit more flexible. Surfing looks interesting as well. Unfortunately I won't have time to do much travelling, maybe around christmas. But I will see and let you up-to-date of course!
Ok, the next message will be from my parents place, the good old Spremberg, the place of my childhood! ;)
Take care!

the last days in freising

Here we are!
In two days I will leave Freising, I will leave my beloved Bavaria *sniff*. But that are not the only good places in this great world!
The job in Munich kept me quite busy. I am not so happy about the result, but at the end it was quite interesting and they even found more things to do for me. Conclusion: Maybe I am not sooo bad in programming as I always affirm, but only maybe!
Last week we did a bit of indoor-climbing. *ouch* What a pain the next days! You don't believe it! I could hardly use the keyboard! Besides of this it was fun. And tomorrow the same procedure! But I should definitely do more sport.
I think also this would make me finding the way out of my depression a bit easier. It is getting better now, but there are still moments or even days where I just sit there and stare into space thinking 'what a shitty life'. I found help, but it's a process and I will learn a lot, definitely!
Currently I am reading two books at the same time:
  1. The Cider House Rules by John Irving
  2. Philosophie für alle, die noch etwas vorhaben by Wolfram Eilenberger
The reviews will follow soon! But my list of books I want to read is thereby not getting smaller. Suggestions are welcome!! And thanks a lot for any suggestions so far! ;)
I just noticed that Skype becomes alive again. They're all back from holidays! :) Yeah, holidays, what a word. I will make Australia to my well-deserved holidays of this year. Of course I have to work overthere, but as long as I like and enjoy it, I don't mind calling this holidays!
Ok, guys, next time more about my current activities and non-activities! :) Have a nice day! Take care!

streetfestival in munich

Hey, what a great weekend!!

To escape from folk music and pre-'wies'n-' temper I went back to Munich and retrieved myself between thousands of people being in a good temper on sandy beach on the Leopold-Street!! Yes, that's right. In the hand a cocktail, in the ear relaxing music and in the air these fantastic atmosphere of running clear.

I went there with Fritjof and skates (of course) and we had a great time.

We met a lot of people, ate Crêpes, Langos and chinese food. Listened to music and visited several booths, political and informal ones. I found quite interesting the information about the Transrapid in Munich. In my opinion there are more cons than pros. We will see how the munich people will decide.
We have now the elections soon in Germany, so of course a lot of party-advertising. Fritjof did some tests with the 'poor' promoters. ;)

Anyway, it is getting harder and harder to leave now. They all don't make it easy for me ;) !

THANKS! I will miss you!

evenings in Munich and another book review

The summer is back, at last!!!

I spent two nice evenings in Munich. Yesterday I met Maja, a good friend of mine from the gold old days in Schwabing!! ;) We had fun in a Biergarten at the Rosenheimer Platz. Ok, it was an Italian restaurant, but it doesn't matter. Girls gossiping!!! I hope we can make it seeing each other the next days before she goes to Peru and me to Brisbane!!
Today I met Fritjof and Chris in the English Garden in Munich for a beer and skating through the dark! ;) Wow!!! How scary!!! Yeah, not really, but I like skating through Munich in the dark. I did it already before and it is just brilliant!!
Well, I will definitely miss all this when I have to leave. Actually the end of this month *sniff*.
Today I recieved a postcard from Markus and Dani from their holiday trip in Switzerland. Yes, a real postcard with a stamp on it!! ;) Thanks guys!! I really like it and it will definitely help to make "my way" without you!!

I actually made to finish a book in two days. Really!! Namely the book "Takedown. The Pursuit and Capture of Kevin Mitnick, America's Most Wanted Computer Outlaw - By the Man Who Did It" by Tsutomu Shimomura. (Link in german) Ok, one can think about this what one wants to, but it is a real story. There were lots of public discussion about this after that happened. The story is now more than ten years old, but still a quite up-to-date topic in terms of the software patents and so on. I can recommand this book even if you are not so into UNIX-commands!! ;)

Ok, I know, I should add some pictures, but I don't have a digital camera yet!! *sulk*! Anyway, have a good night and take care!!!
